Idol Watch: Sanjaya Says Farewell
The misery of Morrissey was apropos for the mood of the "American Idol" judges when Sanjaya Malakar wrapped up his miserable take on "Something To Talk About." The panel of three didn't bother with any niceties and seemed intent on derailing the Malakar express. We got a sense the show's powers-that-be were fed up with Sanjaya's meta-wink-wink performances and that the "joke" had ceased to be funny.
The reality TV titan averted doomsday scenarios in which Sanjaya outlasted the presumptive final four of Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin, and Blake thanks to a seventh-place dismissal of the boy wonder. With searches on the show sliding, Sanjaya could have stuck around and drained the watercooler dry while the show's credibility crumbled.
He's topped our Search charts since the final 12, and we'll readily admit that we'll miss his buzz-worthy performances. Just at the moment when most pundits were giving him a pass into the final 5, he was whacked by voter indifference. Did the novelty wear off?
We're sure some voters will whisper conspiracy and the timing does seem convenient with the show headed into their star-laden charity special next week. A serious appeal to end poverty mixed with Sanjaya's goofy mewling would have been discordant to say the least.
